G G/f Em
Mister Tanner was a cleaner from a town in the Mid
G/d
west
G G/f Em
And of all the cleaning shops around hed made his the
D
best
C Bb Am7 G
But he also was a baritone who sang while hanging
clothes
G/f Em
He practiced scales while pressing tails and sang at local
D
shows
Em D
His friends and neighbors praised the voice that poured out
from his throat
Em D
They said that he should use his gift in stead of cleaning
coats
G Bm Am7
But music was his life, it was not his livelihood
Em G/d
And it made him feel so happy and it made him feel so
D/c
good
G/b C G/d D
And he sang from his heart and he sang from his
soul
G C G C
He did not know how well he sang, it just made him
G
whole
G G/f Em
His friends kept working on him to try music out full
G/d
time
G G/f Em D
A big debut and rave reviews a great career to
climb
C Bb Am7 G
Finally they got to him he would take the fling
G/f Em D
A concert agent in New York agreed to have him sing
Em D
And there were plane tickets, phone calls, money spent to
rent the hall
Em D
It took most of his savings but he gladly used them all
G Bm Am7
But music was his life, it was not his livelihood
Em G/d
And it made him feel so happy and it made him feel so
D/c
good
G/b C G/d D
And he sang from his heart and he sang from his
soul
G C G C
He did not know how well he sang, it just made him
G
whole
G G/f Em
The evening came he took the stage his face set in a
G/d
smile
G G/f Em
And in the half filled hall the critics sat watching
D
on the aisle
C Bb Am7
But the concert was a blur to him spatters of applause
G
G/f Em D
He did not know how well he sang, he only heard the
flaws
Em D
But the critics were concise, it only took four lines
Em D
But no one could accuse them of being overkind
G G/f
(spoken) Mr Martin Tanner, Baritone, of Dayton Ohio
Eb G/d
Made his Town Hall debut last night. He came well
prepared
C
But unfortunately his presentation was not up to contemporary
Bb Abmaj7
Professional standards. His voice lacks the range of
tonal color
G
Necessary to make it consistently interesting
C Bb G
Full time consideration of an other endeavor might be in
order
G/fEm G/dG G/fEm G/d

G G/f Em
He came back home to Dayton and was questioned by his
G
friends
G G/f Em
Then he smiled and just said nothing and he never sang
D
again
C Bb Am
Excepting very late at night when the shop was dark and
G
closed
D
He sang softly to himself as he sorted through the clothes
G Bm Am7
- Music was his life, it was not his livelihood
Em G D
And it made him feel so happy, it made him feel so good
G/b C G D
And he sang from his heart and he sang from his
soul
G C
And he did not know how well he sang
Bb Abmaj7 G
It just made him whole
